
Whereas someone might need help managing their time more efficiently, the next person I speak with is desperately seeking a strategy to work and play well with others. The next appointment might be with someone trying to improve communication skills, and the one following that comes from a person who is mired in emotional bondage and unable to release the pain of a long past conflict. An email here and there from someone who has read one of my blogs and has a question or a Tweet from some one who wants information on hypnosis CDs. It’s unpredictable and fresh each day. And that’s nice.
However, there are some overarching things that apply to each of these disparate individuals. I remind them that if they are committed to achieving whatever it is they say they want, it will require them to step out of their current situations and embark on an intentional program of personal development that is tailored to their specific goals for career, relationships, financial success, physical health, spiritual fulfillment and simply a happy and joyful life in general.
Where is a good place to begin? Here are a few key areas to focus on.
Confidence. Many people suffer a lack in confidence, which greatly hinders personal growth. Henry Ford is quoted as saying, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.” Improving one’s confidence is a great step forward in achieving one’s dreams. Confidence is NOT something that some people are born with and others are not. It is a learned response that has a physiological component, as well as a psychological component. Again, using NLP, you can make rapid changes to your state, moving from an unresourceful, unconfident state to a peak state of confidence. Successful people are able to break free of “victim” thinking, reject “poor me/pity parties,” and take responsibility for their future.
Stress and Depression Issues. Stress is known to create a barrier that often gets in the way of achieving the simplest of tasks. It can be overwhelming and frustrating when life seems uncontrollable. When we lose control of daily situations, it can feel like we are being pulled in different directions. Life simply becomes stressful! Find some quiet time. Personal time is one of the things that get sacrificed when people get busy. Take time for self-care. Make sure you get a full 8 hours of sleep, eat a balanced diet, get a good amount of exercise, and practice positive self-talk. Learn to be flexible. Relax! Take a deep breath and try to have a flexible state of mind. Remember, it’s all right to let go of activities that no longer complement the lifestyle you want so you can have the time to commit to other things. By doing this, you can start to create a peaceful, joyful and a more balanced life.
The Mental Game is the fuel that keeps the progress of change in forward motion. A positive mental attitude that positions you to taking the stance that nothing is able to defeat you except for your self-doubt is a great way to get set the stage of success. Conversely, a negative attitude serves only to make it that much harder by reducing your energy levels and arresting the flow of creativity. Again, NLP techniques allow you to tap into the power of the subconscious mind to keep you moving forward.
At some point in time, individuals seeking personal development come to a place where they have achieved all they can do on their own. They have either plateaued and begun a period of stagnation or are already in decline and have realized it. This is a great time to seek the assistance of a personal coach.
