Great leaders have experienced failures in their pasts, but never quit trying and never gave up. They reach the pinnacles of success by not accepting failure as an option and go on to achieve great things. Sometimes though, no matter how hard you try, your efforts seem not to amount to anything and you feel close to failure. Most of the time you’re telling yourself self-defeating lies and other times you just need to pick yourself up and start all over again. When you leave the "failure" in the dust and begin again, you’re negating its importance and know that those efforts didn’t work – so now, it’s time to move on to something that does work. No matter where you are in your life, failure doesn’t have to be an option you think about and resign yourself to. The heightened expectations and pressures (either financial or social) are piled on the routine, daily issues that we face. In the next article, which will be a little closer to the peak of the holiday hullaballoo and have a greater impact for you, I’ll deal with “holiday specific” issues. In this article, I want to help you improve your reaction to the mental stressors you already have in your life as a way of getting ahead of the game over the next few weeks. The mental stress you face on a daily basis can often be more challenging to overcome than physical stress. Sometimes, holding onto the mental stresses you face can seem like the only option available. But you can learn to let go of this type of stress, and find more happiness than you ever expected. ![]() In his book, The Tao of Daily Life, Derek Lin recounts this revered Chinese story: “Once upon a time in ancient China, the people at a village received orders from the regional governor to build a shrine for the emperor. If they could meet the deadline, the governor would reward them handsomely. The chosen location for the shrine had a well, so they needed to fill it up before construction could take place. They brought in a donkey to transport piles of sand and mud for that purpose. An accident occurred. The donkey got too close to the exposed well, lost his footing, and fell into it. The villagers tried to lift him out but could not. After many failed attempts, they realized it would take too long to rescue him. Keeping the deadline in mind, the villagers decided to sacrifice the donkey. They proceeded to shovel sand and mud into the well, thinking they had no choice but to bury him alive. When the donkey realized what they were doing, he began to wail pitifully. The villagers heard him but ignored him. The value of the donkey wasn’t much compared to the rewards they would get, so they continued to shovel. After a while, the wailing stopped. The villagers wondered about this. Was the donkey dead already? Or did he just give up? What was going on? ![]() One of the things that I really enjoy about being a life transformation coach is the amazing diversity of people that I deal with. Unlike a coach who specializes is a particular field, such as weight loss, business development, or financial planning where the clients all have a common issue they are struggling to master, when I sit down to begin a discussion with someone, I never know what is going to come up. It keeps me on my toes and more importantly, it keeps me completely focused and attentive to the person I’m dealing with. Whereas someone might need help managing their time more efficiently, the next person I speak with is desperately seeking a strategy to work and play well with others. The next appointment might be with someone trying to improve communication skills, and the one following that comes from a person who is mired in emotional bondage and unable to release the pain of a long past conflict. An email here and there from someone who has read one of my blogs and has a question or a Tweet from some one who wants information on hypnosis CDs. It’s unpredictable and fresh each day. And that’s nice. However, there are some overarching things that apply to each of these disparate individuals. I remind them that if they are committed to achieving whatever it is they say they want, it will require them to step out of their current situations and embark on an intentional program of personal development that is tailored to their specific goals for career, relationships, financial success, physical health, spiritual fulfillment and simply a happy and joyful life in general.
