To-do lists are a useful tool for prioritizing your workload, for making sure you don't forget anything and for visualizing all the things you have to do. Once you've created your to-do list, you can then work through it one item at a time and that way get a real sense of progress as you tick each item off.

If you occasionally feel challenged by the views of friends and family, you know how frustrating it can feel to realize that you have no control over their thoughts or responses. The good news is that you can always change your own perspectives.

Life is a lot like swimming: if you have good technique, you can glide along easily and effortlessly. If you go about it the wrong way, you end up thrashing around and attract the sharks. Life can be quite easy, with the right approach.
Give these suggestions an honest try and you’ll enjoy some positive changes in your life: ![]() As December 2014 comes to a close, many of us will decide that we need to make some changes in our lives. Unfortunately, most of us will not take it any farther than that. Only a few of us will take the most important step--the necessity of taking time to write down your thoughts, dreams, visions, and goals. This comes from data gleaned from interviews with successful people in many different fields, who had written down their objectives and spent time on a daily basis renewing their commitment to those goals. While the classic story of the 1953 Harvard class has been debunked, it is safe to say that the myth teaches a powerful truth. Most people, I would speculate less than 10%, EVER write down goals, and probably less than 5% take the time to regularly review and update their lists. However, it is also true that among those who become famous or successful, writing and visualizing every day about their goals and ambitions is very common. Dr. Win Wenger believes that the very act of writing about your goals and thoughts will stimulate more development in your brain and will help you achieve your ambitions. Maybe so. But simply taking out a sheet of paper and scribbling out some general good suggestions for the next couple of years isn’t going to do much. You still have to take decisive action and do things to accomplish your goals. However, taking the time to write them down (by hand, on paper, by the way!) can be an important part of raising your awareness, generating positive energy vibrations, and increasing your self- confidence. Here is one way you can get started: ![]() Let’s face it: very few of us come close to achieving our true potential. Marianne Williamson writes: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of god. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of god that is within us. It is not just in some of us. It is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” I agree with Marianne. A major reason that many of us underachieve is because we don’t allow ourselves the luxury of imagining what could be possible in our lives if we simply got out of our own way. And because we won’t allow ourselves to envision it or imagine it, what we want becomes impossible for us to ever create. Every super successful person you’ve ever heard of will tell you that it all starts with dreaming of big, expansive, seemingly impossible dreams and making a commitment to seeing them come into being. It’s scary, it’s uncomfortable, and it’s so very necessary because when you allow yourself to entertain truly big dreams, your self-esteem and self-confidence begin to climb. As you feel better and more confident about your ability to handle whatever life throws at you, you become more flexible and open to innovation. This is really the moment that things begin to change for the better. ![]()

Implementing these should result in greater satisfaction at work, better relationships with loved ones, and a marked increase in your energy level. All of these combine for lifting you to a higher level of overall health, vitality, and enjoyment of life. ![]() So, I’m FINALLY getting around to doing this piece on procrastination… Procrastination, at root, is a choice. I really do have the ability to take the trash out to the curb the night before trash day, but I choose to watch TV instead. I am perfectly capable of returning my phone messages, but I choose to check my Facebook and Twitter accounts and then go for coffee. I could have done this article four months ago when some friends asked me to, but I chose not to do so. Whether it’s doing your chores, writing your dissertation, or renewing your driver’s license, it seems that most of us need to experience an elevated level of pain before we take action to get it done. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just program ourselves to do the right thing at the right time? Why does it have to hurt before you are willing to do something about it? There’s really no reason that I keep postponing things other than… ![]() One of the most helpful tools that I’ve come across to help you achieve your goals is a “vision board.” Essentially, a vision board is a piece of poster board on which you post images that represent some of your most important dreams. It’s a “low tech” version of Pinterest, in a way, but similar in that you “pin” visual images of your dream house, your dream lover, or your dream career—any area of your life. So, let’s say you have a particular type of house that has always been your fancy. To get started on your vision board, you begin collecting pictures from magazines or downloading images from the Internet that show the kind of house you want. You can find interior shots that speak to your tastes, as well as displays of the various rooms and the furniture you would like to see in each room. When you have the pictures you like, glue them to the poster board, perhaps designating a certain corner or area of the board as your “dream home” area. Some people like to “Photoshop” themselves into the pictures to create an ever deeper emotional connection. |
