Why You Really Need to Use Positive Affirmations If You Want To Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind1/30/2016 ![]()
When I first began studying to be a coach, I noticed very quickly that everyone was adamant about the value of “affirmations” for helping people to achieve their goals. My first reaction was decidedly negative! “Just because you say something over and over again doesn’t make it so!”

When I was just launching my coaching practice, I looked at the self-help/business section at Barnes & Noble and noticed book after book on productivity, effectiveness training, time management, planning and goal setting. In my mind, that meant that people were spending money to learn how to master those types of challenges, and so I patterned my marketing around those issues.
Now, after having around the block a couple of times, I realize that for most part those are symptoms and not the real problem. Even though we pour tons of money and time into books, tapes, and seminars on general productivity, I’ve come to believe that the deeper issue is that many of us pour all that time and money into careers that don’t really matter to us. The results, not surprisingly, are disappointing, because we’re trying infuse our work with energy and effectiveness, and those things don’t come from outside. They can’t be infused if there’s no passion, no purpose. As I talk with people, it becomes very clear to me that one cannot be truly effective and successful without being passionate about what you’re doing. So how do you discover your passion? Where do you find your deepest, fundamental, core life purpose? ![]()
Whatever you’re trying to accomplish, clarity is paramount. Being consistent and staying on track is largely a result of being unambiguous about your life and purpose. Fortunately, getting clarity in your life is easy with a little daily effort.
Having clear goals is critical. Your brain is much more capable of finding solutions if the objective is obvious. You’ll also stay on track more easily if the end result is clear to you. If you don’t have a specific endpoint in mind, you could end up anywhere. And even if you do land in the right place by sheer luck, how would you know you were there? ![]()
When I’m working with a new coaching client who happens to be a small business owner or a management professional in a corporate setting, one of the first topics I like to explore is how can neuro-linguistic programming can help their business and improve their leadership and management effectiveness.
NLP has come a long way since its inception in the 1970s. In the 40 years since, businesses have learned how to tweak certain aspects of NLP to generate more sales and profits, keep customers happy, and communicate more effectively. Here are six of the top benefits of NLP in a business setting: ![]()
An effective NLP technique which can help abolish many bad or unwanted habits and behaviors, such as smoking, overeating, nail biting, and so forth is the “Swish” pattern. It works by changing your focus just when you are about to drop into the old habit unconsciously, putting a newly-introduced desirable habit into your conscious mind as a substitute. This interruption changes your focus and makes you consciously aware of what you are about to do.
Remember, whenever you desire to break a habit, it is very important to substitute a more desirable habit in its place. Trying to break a bad habit without substituting some desirable alternative in its place leaves a void, and the unconscious may try to fill the void by bringing back the old bad habit or another unwanted behavior in its place. The Swish pattern has several different variations. Here are two simple ways of executing it: ![]() In the audio version of Unlimited Power, Tony Robbins says, “The quality of your life is the quality of your questions.” That’s a powerful statement, but one that is often under appreciated. Questions can be an important way of communicating with others and getting inside their belief systems and most of us have some recognition of this power. We’ve been taught to ask “open ended” questions and to use active listening to encourage the person we are talking with to open up even more. People who have been trained in NLP will automatically begin using questions to ascertain someone’s representational systems. These are all great applications of question asking, but the most often overlooked application is also one of the most powerful—it’s when we turn the questions upon ourselves. ![]() It’s the end of August, summer is coming to a close, and the beginning of a new school year is upon us. There is great promise in new beginnings. My daughter is busy preparing her Kindergarten classroom for the new group of kids who will show up in few days and my wife and I are doing our best to help her with all of the things that go with teaching elementary grades. As I do these tasks, my mind often wanders and the other day I began thinking about the process of learning itself. How does that actually work? What is the “winning mindset” that one needs to have when it comes learning something new? How do you approach learning (which can be a scary thing) with feelings of confidence in yourself as a learner? I think many of us have convinced ourselves that learning is hard, after all, we’re not kids anymore and it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks! Obviously, learning is truly going to be all that more difficult if you enter into the task from an orientation of self-doubt, of recalling negative experiences from 40 years ago when you were in grammar school, when you operate from a lack of confidence. What should you do if you don’t have great self-confidence in yourself as a student or life-long learner? What is you are bored to death or are convinced that you’ll never understand the subject matter? The good news is that you can harness the power of visualization to dramatically improve your ability to learn quickly and easily. ![]() I really loved my ten days on the island of Oahu, one of the eight major islands that comprise the state of Hawaii. It was fabulous! For me, one of the best features of the whole trip was the beautiful scenery and the mild temperatures. I never thought I’d have to go to an equatorial tropical island in order to cool off, but Houston, Texas in the summer is just that hot these days! Anyway, the downside is that it’s an eight hour flight from Bush Intercontinental to Honolulu, which can be difficult for people with fears about flying or confined spaces. Not being comfortable in an airliner means you’ll probably never get to Hawaii. It may keep you from advancing in your career if you need to do business internationally. You might not see your grandchildren if they live out of state. Is there a way to use NLP and hypnosis to make traveling easier? Sure there is! ![]()
He sees a problem, decides on the spot to intervene, and quickly locates a convenient phone booth to transform himself from mild mannered Clark Kent into our hero, Superman! Wouldn’t it be awesome if you too could quickly “change” yourself into whomever you needed to be to confidently confront and master any difficulty? What if you could do this even if you didn’t have a spandex costume or access to a phone booth? Well, you can–and here’s how!
In the practice of NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming), we use anchors as a quick and easy way to allow someone to enter a highly resourceful state whenever they want to. It’s similar to movies on demand. You press a button on your remote control, and Voila! There it is. In the same way, an anchor in NLP is a deliberately set connection between a stimulus and a certain emotional response that becomes neurologically linked. The idea is to anchor certain triggers to positive emotional states – meaning that you can feel confident, energized, happy, etc. on demand. Here’s how it works… ![]() I noticed that one of my old friends had posted to Facebook that he was beginning yet another attempt to quit smoking. As a former smoker myself, I can understand how challenging it can be to crush out that final butt and not light another one. I also know that it is most certainly possible to break the smoking habit, and the majority of people who decide to give it up are able to do so—and do so permanently. But how? The easiest and most effective method to quit smoking is through hypnotherapy and EFT (emotional freedom techniques). This week I’ll talk about the former and next week about the latter. You’ll be able to get started quickly and strengthen the gains you make with either technology to improve your results. |
