The easiest and most effective method to quit smoking is through hypnotherapy and EFT (emotional freedom techniques). This week I’ll talk about the former and next week about the latter. You’ll be able to get started quickly and strengthen the gains you make with either technology to improve your results.
By far, the most challenging part is what to do with your brain for the rest of your life! Once the physical addition is broken, the much more complex problem of overcoming the psychological addiction begins. When you begin smoking, it’s a learned behavior that you begin to develop into habit. The habit is based on your desire to change your emotional state before, during, or after you encounter certain situations. It might be to pump up and get motivated, or to relax. It might be to gain confidence, or savor the afterglow of sex. Whatever it is, you develop a conditioned response (desire) to smoke in certain situations.
Hypnosis works to eliminate the unconscious associations that prompt you to light up. If you don’t break these patterns, you will eventually go back to smoking. You probably know people (or you’ve experienced this yourself) who have tried to quit smoking using nicotine gums or patches alone, but were unsuccessful. On the biological level, they were likely to have broken the physical addiction, but they had no replacement for their smoking “ritual.” And let’s face it, smoking did provide something of pleasure for them. It’s hard to give up pleasure and replace it with NOTHING!
So, then, beginning a course of hypnotherapy sessions, combined with some NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) techniques, you can break the smoking habit by reprogramming your subconscious mind to focus on what you really want—the fantastic, life changing benefits of quitting. Remember, your subconscious mind always looks for ways to fulfill the tasks you give it. What you focus on, it tends to manifest. That’s why it’s helpful to have a BIG WHY and know some of the physiology involved.
Within days of quitting, body parts damaged by smoking begin to heal, damaged nerves re-grow, and the sense of taste and smell improves. Within a few weeks, circulation and lung function improve. Within one year, your risk of heart disease is less than half that of a smoker. Within five to fifteen years, the risk of having a stroke is the same as a non-smoker. Your risk of heart disease is the same as someone who has never smoked at all, and your risk of death from lung cancer and numerous other cancer risks have decreased.
Hypnosis is a powerful tool for eliminating cravings for cigarettes. If you don’t have access to a trained hypnotherapist in your area, purchasing some self-hypnosis CDs can helpful. Two of my favorite sources are Glenn Harrold and Steve G. Jones.
Even though quitting smoking can be an unsuccessful endeavor for some, it doesn’t have to be that way for you. Take advantage of hypnotherapy and you’ll have a much greater chance of success than not.
Next week, we’ll take a look at how to use EFT (emotional freedom techniques) to break free of smoking.
