Have you ever noticed how people believe certain things about themselves, and yet how the exact opposite trait tends to show up in their actions? Values drive actions.
What do you value? If you truly value a particular thing/trait, then it will show up in your actions. How many times have you said you value something, but then you never followed through and actually did it?
Values have little to do with talk, but everything to do with walk. For example, you may say you value your health, but if you never exercise and continue to fill it with junk food, then your actions reveal that, despite your talk, you do not truly value your health. You may say you value your family, but if you do not spend quality time with your spouse and children, then no matter how much you protest and offer excuses, the fact is that something else in your life has a higher value you and you are choosing it over them.
Values are your core beliefs and they manifest in daily life as the actions you take in the moment of choice. You will choose to live out what you value.
This is a great time of the year (as we move into establishing our new Fall Season routines) to do a thorough and honest inventory, asking the question, “Am I really living my values?” Here's how to get started...

- Advancement
- Adventure
- Affection
- Competitiveness

- Wisdom
Now, go through the list and identify your top ten values. Then, out of that list of ten, go through it again and choose your top five. Then repeat and cull the list to three. One of those three will be your top value.
Chances are, you value all of the ten you started with, but the point is to discover what you value most so that when competing “good” values present themselves, you can prioritize or make trade-offs, you have some way of making those calls. You can also ask family members or close friends to tell you what they believe you value. They know you best and have seen your life up close and personal.
After examining yourself you may realize you have some values you do not particularly like. The good news is you can change your values. Remember, values deal with how you act and you can change how you act. In other words, if you thought you valued honesty, but after inspecting yourself you see dishonesty actually shows up more often than you would like; you can change that.
Remember, you have the power to change your values. Don’t waste another moment being frustrated, angry, or sorrowful. Begin changing your values from what they are to what you desire them to be. When you are living your true self, you’ll enjoy life more. Start on your journey to living your true self today!
