So, I’m FINALLY getting around to doing this piece on procrastination… Procrastination, at root, is a choice. I really do have the ability to take the trash out to the curb the night before trash day, but I choose to watch TV instead. I am perfectly capable of returning my phone messages, but I choose to check my Facebook and Twitter accounts and then go for coffee. I could have done this article four months ago when some friends asked me to, but I chose not to do so. Whether it’s doing your chores, writing your dissertation, or renewing your driver’s license, it seems that most of us need to experience an elevated level of pain before we take action to get it done. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just program ourselves to do the right thing at the right time? Why does it have to hurt before you are willing to do something about it? There’s really no reason that I keep postponing things other than… When I was a parish pastor, I loved Monday mornings! Of course, Monday was my day off, which has a significantly different vibe than for most people who find Monday morning to be their least favorite part of the week. If your work environment is particularly stressful, it’s a double whammy. Stress increases anxiety and lowers creativity. If you’re not happy about being there, chances are your productivity will be dramatically lower than what it could be. And when it comes time for promotion, retention, or perks, the spoils go to those who produce. Let’s explore a few strategies you can begin using right now to beat workplace stress and set yourself up for greater job satisfaction and maybe even a little extra on your paycheck!
He sees a problem, decides on the spot to intervene, and quickly locates a convenient phone booth to transform himself from mild mannered Clark Kent into our hero, Superman! Wouldn’t it be awesome if you too could quickly “change” yourself into whomever you needed to be to confidently confront and master any difficulty? What if you could do this even if you didn’t have a spandex costume or access to a phone booth? Well, you can–and here’s how!
In the practice of NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming), we use anchors as a quick and easy way to allow someone to enter a highly resourceful state whenever they want to. It’s similar to movies on demand. You press a button on your remote control, and Voila! There it is. In the same way, an anchor in NLP is a deliberately set connection between a stimulus and a certain emotional response that becomes neurologically linked. The idea is to anchor certain triggers to positive emotional states – meaning that you can feel confident, energized, happy, etc. on demand. Here’s how it works… One of the most helpful tools that I’ve come across to help you achieve your goals is a “vision board.” Essentially, a vision board is a piece of poster board on which you post images that represent some of your most important dreams. It’s a “low tech” version of Pinterest, in a way, but similar in that you “pin” visual images of your dream house, your dream lover, or your dream career—any area of your life. So, let’s say you have a particular type of house that has always been your fancy. To get started on your vision board, you begin collecting pictures from magazines or downloading images from the Internet that show the kind of house you want. You can find interior shots that speak to your tastes, as well as displays of the various rooms and the furniture you would like to see in each room. When you have the pictures you like, glue them to the poster board, perhaps designating a certain corner or area of the board as your “dream home” area. Some people like to “Photoshop” themselves into the pictures to create an ever deeper emotional connection. I noticed that one of my old friends had posted to Facebook that he was beginning yet another attempt to quit smoking. As a former smoker myself, I can understand how challenging it can be to crush out that final butt and not light another one. I also know that it is most certainly possible to break the smoking habit, and the majority of people who decide to give it up are able to do so—and do so permanently. But how? The easiest and most effective method to quit smoking is through hypnotherapy and EFT (emotional freedom techniques). This week I’ll talk about the former and next week about the latter. You’ll be able to get started quickly and strengthen the gains you make with either technology to improve your results. |
